ARMIN CSIZMADIA

My work explores the expressionism of aesthetics,
stories, and atmospheres that inspire me. I specialize in printmaking, often blending digital planning in Photoshop with traditional mediums like charcoal, graphite, and paint. I’m particularly drawn to the unexpected outcomes of printmaking, which align with my expressive style.

I am passionate about the intersection of science and art, particularly the fusion of psychology and neuroscience with creative practice. Recently, I’ve begun creating multisensory pieces that combine visuals with scent, a direction I aim to pursue further.

ROJECT SOUND INSPIRED ILLUSTRATION- woodwork induction.

An expressionist 3D work, that was inspired by an indonesian concert, mixing traditional and electronic styles with self made instruments, creating a natural but distopian setting.
As I was listening to the concert, I got this image popping into my head that I want to create an expressive 3D installation that captures the atmosphere of the concert. I intended to make this work very intuitive, and jsut trust my feelings in adding elements without thinking about every single element.
I wanted to recreate the distopian and natural tone with use of natural materials such as wood, which I wanted to contras with metals, wires and plastic. At the end I wanted to add light, and create a mix of the sounds of the concert and include them in the work.

I first started started creating collages, and looked for materials that would be interesting to include. I found coloured woods really interesting, industrial plastics, zip ties and solid foams, I wanted colours to be vivid, perhaps neon too.

I like the blue and green translucent plastic texture, especially with the idea of printing letters onto it and sticking on stickers. I think it also goes well with wood an is an interesting, industrial contrast.

This wooden gate illustrates how well lights work with wood, which is the reason I wanted to go with it. I thought of incorporating similar lights as in the event, but I also really like these colours here. Light and wood is an interesting and fascinating contrast between modern technological and ancient/traditional.

On the bottles below, I liked the zip ties, vivid colours and foam caps. It has the interesting tone of recycling which suits this project.

After this, I started creating some sketches. I exactly sketched the image that popped into my head when I was listening to the concert. Then I progressively started to refine and explore it more.

The first sketch (left) below illustrates two wooden cubes on top of each other, while the yellow elements are the plastic covering it. It wasnt destopian enought thought so I made more.
In the second sketch on the left, I started to incorporate elements I liked such as the cap of the colourful bottles. On the right, I tried out a monochrome style with elements of traditional ornamentation on the right edge. I also intended the red light to be projected on with light.

On this version I played with photoshop, changing the colours and adding extra bits. In the end I liked this version the most and the monochrome red one, so I decided that in the final I will go with two wooden cubes on the top of each other, and build around that.

Once we started working in the studio, I started making sketches of stickers I would like to stick on the top of the plastic. I wanted these to reflect street culture, and to be similar to stickers people would find on metros and industrial sites. at the meantime I started to research for artists, and concepts. I looked at artists who work with light such as Dan flavin and James Turrel.

Listening to Trevor Mathinson’s artist talk was inspiring and reassuring in this field, as he created sound installations himself. Furthermore we listened to his sound project which he performed on stage by mixing sounds, creating an atmosphere that was could be interpreted intuitively by the viewer. It also reassured me that intuitive sound installations and atmpsheric art projects are indeed a project worthy idea.

In my research, I read a few pages into the book ‘Music visualisation’ which further reinforced my ideas of technology, nature, and mixing light with music and natural elements.

The images below (left) present development.Research into this sound installation project influenced the other project “Project Razzmatazz” as I was researching into expressive artworks, and materialisation of experiences into objects.
On the other (right) I found Mona hatoum really intersting because she creates artworks of random things she finds. This baby doll in an egg cutter is a sketch I made of one of her works. it looked like a 3d collage which I found really interesting, and it also resonated with my ideas, as I was creating a 3d expressive collage to recreate an atmosphere.

(left).Sketches of the plastic and stickers I would stick on the top. I would want them to be vivid and industrial looking. Perhaps having writing in asian on it to reflect the asian, Indonesian atmosphere.
(Right). A page I found inspiring in “Music Visualisation”. It reminded me of James Turrel’s works but in a musical, natural context.

The latest piece of this project is thist 60x60 cm wooden block, which is one of the 2 that is going to be the base armature for the installation. I put the project on a break while the final piece for studio 1 module is being made.
